The pregnant woman and a donut

Today’s post is more of a rambling about unsolicited advice. And yes I know it comes from a place of you know usually care and looking out for you but when strangers tell you in the middle of a Tim Hortons that you cannot eat a donut because it would give your baby diabetes there has to be a line.

If you’re not my doctor what business is it of yours to tell me what I’m allowed to eat or do. I understand that older generations have knowledge and that’s fine I’m more than willing to listen but they also need to understand that our generation holds knowledge that they could never have even fathomed. Science has brought us a long way with understanding what can and cannot cause problems for babies, it’s come a long way in understanding infant safety, infant health and gestational health. And there’s still a long way to go, But not acknowledging what we have learned because it’s not the way it was when you had children doesn’t do anyone any good.

Eating my donut isn’t the only advice that strangers give while you’re pregnant. Everyone has a opinion about what foods you can eat and what drinks you can drink and how you should raise your baby. They all know what exactly is the best way whether that be by using blankets in the crib or not, or offering pacifiers or how your baby is dressed or how your dressed everyone has an opinion about something. What we need to do is take that information in and make an informed decision because the truth is you’re the only one that can make the choices for your baby, for your families, for your life.

So, I’m going to enjoy my donut, I’m going to enjoy my cup of coffee and I’m not going to put any blankets in my baby’s bed. But none of those things mean that I’m a bad mom or that I don’t know what I’m doing, I have just taken all of the information available to me and used it in a way that I feel benefits my baby, and if that’s not for you, that’s your choice.
