GTT day. AKA The Gestational Diabetes Test.

Morning humans! This starts a bit late in my pregnancy but I promise I’ll go back and cover all the details! Today makes 27 weeks and 5 days into my pregnancy, and I’m doing my 2 hour Glucose Tolerance Test. Sweet and simple puts it mildly ๐Ÿ˜œ but here’s the run down. When you arrive they check you in like normal, they take your fasting blood work and sugar levels and then give you a ‘sugar drink’ think the equivalent of flat pop with extra sugar. Once you’ve finished the drink you have 2 more blood draws at 1 hour and 2 hours. This test is one of the most widely studied for use in pregnancy and though gross is totally safe!

Since I’m writing this post in live time I’ll give you a blow by blow of my experience.

8:45 Got my initial blood draw done, quick and painless. 4 different vials because I had some other tests done too. Now I’ve got about 5 minutes to drink down my sugar drink.

9:05 So that drink was nasty, tasted like celery water with Cotton Candy dissolved in it. ๐Ÿคฎ But I’m keeping it down so far, they’ve got me sitting in the waiting room until my next draw at 9:50.

9:35 Oh lordy is this getting hard. I’m nauseous as all heck and baby is kicking up a storm. I’ve been fasting for… 14 hours at this point and have had the glucose down for about 40 minutes. My mask is starting to make me hot and my anxiety is spiking because of it. Since you’re not allowed to drink anything after the sugar drink, I can’t even have water to try and quell how I’m feeling.

9:50 Time for my second blood draw of the day. One of the two of us is still more excited by that drink than the other. I’ll let you guess who. Starting to get really thirsty now and the nausea is just getting worse, still not allowed to drink anything.

10:45 The nausea has lifted a little bit, 15 more minutes to wait and then I can drink my water ๐ŸคžThe waiting room is getting a little busy at this point and I’m getting my practice in asking people not to touch my belly. Probably one of my biggest pet peeves of pregnancy, especially during this pandemic. Please step back and unless I invite you to touch me, I strongly suggest you don’t.

11:00 Finally I’m free!! I brought a Lara bar and a water bottle for the walk home so now I can have a bit of a snack! I think I would have fared less nauseous if it wasn’t the middle of a pandemic and I could not wear a mask, it just started to make me feel claustrophobic. Now I’m heading home to put my feet up and eat some food in an effort to avoid the inevitable sugar crash that I haven’t experienced this bad since I tried to eat a whole box of pixie sticks as a kid!

Baby update? Still bouncing off the walls like a hyper little gremlin, definitely does not need any more sugar today!
